Only book 1 is pictured, but the set includes both workbooks for kindergarten. Horizons Math Kindergarten builds the foundation for the method of study that is used all the way through the Horizons Math program. Every concept follows a deliberate pattern of introduction and gradual development. Each lesson begins with a new concept or an expansion of a previously covered concept. This introduction starts a cycle of repetition and review that students will experience as they work through the lessons. Horizons Math Kindergarten lays a foundation for order and exactness. The daily practice in the student books teaches the recognition and printing of the numerals 0 to 100. Simple addition and subtraction from 0 to 10 are taught. the addition-subtraction concept is extended through 99 with the aid of counters and the number line. Counting through 100 is presented by 1's, 10's, 5's, 2's, 3's, and 4's. Principles of place value, measurement, calendar use, telling time, graphing, comparisons, and money concepts are also introduced.

ATTENTION GETTER (PAGES), BUT SEEMS TOO EASY!!!!

I had purchased this Kindergarten set in early January 2010 for our daughter who had turned 4 years old less than a month prior, but had missed the December 2nd cut-off for Pre-Kindergarten entrance because of her December 15th birthday. She had been eager to start school, carry a backpack and learn like the big kids. I had to explain to her that she would have to wait one more year. That did not go well. I then decided that I would begin to teach her at home and get her started with school myself so I ordered this book online. This Kindergarten set comes with two books and a teacher's guide. I do not recommend buying this as a set because the teacher's guide is not really needed. I never needed to use it at all. The student books, 1 and 2, are very easy to follow. With so many repeated lessons in different styles & presentations that this book has, after a while, my daughter was able to read the directions and complete the lessons on her own after I had explained them to her once a while back. Which is pretty good. I like that about these books. Once she got the hang of it, I was pretty much just there because I never let her work alone. I was always there watching and ready to assist her if I had to. You would do just fine if you were to only purchase student books 1 and 2. If your child could already count to 100 (forward & backward), he will do just fine. These books have a lot of vertical and horizontal addition & subtraction problems (98-5=)(69+9=), what number comes before, after & between, and more & less all up to the number 100. There are other activities as well. The pages are VERY bright and not too cluttered with info. These pages could hold almost any young child's attention. My daughter would always whine whenever I told her it was time to stop working in the book. I would get tired after 45 minutes but she could do 10 pages or more (back & front) before she would even think about stopping for even a break. Remember, she had just turned 4 years old, less than a month ago at that time. That worried me. I knew that she understood the problems because she would get them right, but I always felt that she was moving a bit too fast. I always had to pull the book away gently to get her to stop working in it and eat a snack, take a nap, or use the potty. She loved the color pages in this book. They kept her attention so that is a plus. What I do not like about this Kindergarten level is that the two student books seem to be a bit too easy. My daughter finished both student books in this level in a month before we moved to the Grade 1 level today, February 11th 2010. I kid you not. Really, I would not recommend starting at this level. It is better to start at Grade 1, book 1. We are on this book now and I have flipped through the whole book only to discover that Grade 1, book 1 covers EVERYTHING learned in both the Kindergarten student books 1 & 2. Grade 1, book 2 is when the student begins to learn new concepts. I wish I had known this already before starting the K level. She is loving these books and I can see that these books will give her a REALLY GOOD head start on math. I have purchased the Grade 2 set too because I plan on sticking with here on this. I have flipped through all the books that we have and it does get more challenging and overall, from what I see, Horizons Math is fairly solid. I plan on homeschooling our daughter all the way up to the 6th Grade level, even after she is able to start school. I am so glad that we have found this. She loves math and I am happy for her. She will only be a 5-year-old on December 15th 2010 but she is already so far ahead of what she would have been learning math wise if she had been allowed to enter the Pre-K program alone. So that Pre-K cut-off actually worked out in our favor! By Fall of this year(when she's ready for Pre-K by the school districts standards), who knows what level of math she will be working on? We are even reconsidering the public school system and may place our daughter in a private school. We want more emphasis placed on her ability, not just her age.
