Great historical review of the Virginia & Truckee and Carson & Colorado narrow gauge railroads.

This 1957 book production is first class, with heavy coated paper and beautiful half-tone photographs throughout the 108 pages. The photograph layouts change spread to spread and the captions are very well developed. There are a few color plates of nice oil paintings by Howard Fogg. First 70 pages are devoted to the Virginia & Truckee that ran between Virginia City and Carson City, Nevada. The last 37 pages are devoted to the Carson & Colorado that ran from Carson City, NV south to Keeler, CA in the Owens Valley. The last two pages contain extensive data about the engines and cars in each railroad, their build year, type, piston size, cylinders and final disposition. The V&T had 27 different engines, mostly built by Baldwin between 1869 and 1913. The C&C had 17 different engines, again mostly built by Baldwin between 1880-89. This is info you don't normally see. The two maps of the railroad routes are well designed.
The authors, Beebe and Clegg were real characters in their time. Just reading about them is an interesting story in itself. I have two other books they produced, one about Wells Fargo & Co. and the other about San Francisco and they are of the same top quality in every category. For some people their writing style might seem old school but it is full of interesting tid-bits sprinkled in with the normal flow of history. If you are a fan of narrow gauge railroads or the history of the Comstock Silver era, this book should be in your collection.

Steamcars to the Comstock

Lucius Beebe and Charles Clegg are wonderful writers who can transport their readers into the past in a language that evokes nostalgia. Two fascinating railroads are covered in this book. Their story is intertwined with the Nevada and California gold and silver mines of the Comstock Lode, Tonapah and Goldfield. There are legends in the Panamint Mountains. Find them in this well-illustrated book.
