FINEST GOLDEN AGE REPRINT BOOK EVER!

A couple of decades ago this giant size slip-cased set sat neatly atop the filing cabinets holding the comic book reserves of my local and favorite store. It sold for $150.00 and try as I might I could never work up the nerve to buy it. One fateful day I screwed myself up to purchase it - but it was gone, and not a copy was to be found between one end of Long Island to distant New jersey.
I was out of luck, until the internet came along. One of my first purchases was this very set.
But enough about me. The book holds one complete serial back-up story that appeared in "Captain Marvel Adventures" #22 through #46 (1943-1945). It is the complete saga of Captain Marvel vs Mr. Mind the Green Worm from outer space. The story features appearances by Mr. Talky Tawny, Captain Nazi, Dr. Sivana and even Hitler himself. And wait til you see Beck's 'pin-up' style action pages!
It's printed on glossy heavy duty stock and it runs probably a couple hundred pages. Now, here's the really sweet thing: the images are all over-sized as the book is about 10.5 X 12.5 inches and they are PHOTOGRAPHS of the original pages. You get all the original color and the original art! Nothing re-drawn here. The page backgounds are all solid black which makes the color and panels really stand out.
It was printed in 1989 in Belgium by an imprint of a British publisher "HAWK BOOKS": "American Nostalgia Press". It features a sewn binding, hardcovers with a textured slip-case with gold logos.
If you've been a fan of DC's Archives series or Marvel's Masterworks then you will truly appreciate this single volume, more-so if you have a soft spot for the "Big Red Cheese". I've read a number of golden age stories but nothing comes close to the quality, adventure and humor here. There is also a brief history of Captain Marvel as a forward.
Overall, an outstanding and fun book that will stand out as a keepsake from all your other comic related volumes.

Art book with a Comic Book Story.

This reprint book is unlike almost any other. Each panel is treated as it's own little pie of artwork. The selected the best shot they could for each panel from the books they had available. Then the pictures were arranged in the same order they would have been in the comic book. The result is luminous. Each panel is both a free-floating image -- like a Lichtenstein print. But each panel is also part of an original comic book page and the story flows just as if you were reading it from the original books.
The story is created to run like a movie serial would have and goes from issue to issue with a cliffhanger at the end to connect the stories. It is the first appearance of Mr. Mind and features some stereotypes characters that may make some readers whine -- or whinge. Unfortunately, a certain amount of jingoism was typical for a Golden Age story and it can defy logic sometimes. Why is one of the henchman of an alien world conqueror Japanese? Well, no reason really. It was just the stock bad guy they used.
