This book is a fraud - a complete and total FAKE. The fact that a vendor is selling it (at the time of this review) for $95 and advertising it as a "collectible" is a crime! Here are a few facts about this book:

1. Much of the contents was plagiarized directly from an article, published by the Smithsonian Institution and written by J. Duncan Campbell during the early 1960s.

2. J. Duncan Campbell wrote a book called New Belt Buckles of the Old West. In his book, Campbell not only exposed the fact that much of what was "written" was stolen from his article, but also discussed all of the gross errors, hilarious mistakes, and outright lies that are printed in this book.

3. There has never been a publisher by the name of Reeses Press and this book was not printed by this fake publisher.

4. This book was not published in 1950 - the actual date was around 1970.

5. Percy Seibert never wrote this book.

6. The book was printed in England and was used to deceive Americans into buy fake antique belt buckles that claimed to be made by Tiffany. Tiffany, however, never made any of the buckles.

Instead of wasting money on this fake book, Tiffany & Gaylord Express & Exhibition Belt Plates: Exposed!, by Jeff La Marca, not only contains a reprint of this book but also describes many of the bizarre errors in it.

Strange, yet appealing

As I march my way through all the Hugo & Nebula winners I came upon this book. The only other Lieber works I've read have been the very likable Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser series...a fantasy staple. The Big Time is definately an original piece of time travel fiction, yet there is actually no time travel involved in the book. The prose is light on narrative and very heavy on dialogue. I had little to work with in visualizing the surroundings (basically a large room) in which the characters interacted the entire time. Despite this, I did enjoy it for the most part; although once again I am left a little baffled by the ending (a la Babel-17 by Delany). As someone else pointed out (who I agree with) this book reads like a stage play, and could easily be turned into a strange, yet tense, psuedo-time travel suspense. It's a quick read. If you want to hit all the "classics" and can find a copy, go for it. If you're a casual sci-fi reader, I recommend you skip it.

Beyond Ordinary Time Travel Claptrap

A book that deals with time travel in a way beyond anything I've seen before or since. Leiber sees time travel ability as a step in the development of the species, and puts that little philosophical gem into this tight little piece. Not quite a novel (it really does read like a stage play) this actually ends up as a bit of a whodunnit.
Characters put the next stage of human development in the context of ordinary human foibles and frailties, and as always Leiber is able to slip in some big ideas without adding slack to the plot. Lord knows there are lots of authors who could have ladeled on a hundred more pages of lard.
Yes, if your idea of a time travel story is one more adventure of Biff Beefwhacker battling it out with ancient giant ratbeasts, then this will disappoint. If you think the time travel episodes of Star Trek make perfect sense, this will probably hurt your head. But if you want a tightly written, thoughtful, taut, tense, small scale adventure with large scale ideas underneath, this is your book.

The Change War

Fritz Leiber wrote a number of short science fiction stories about the "Change War," but this was his only novel on that theme. It won the Hugo Award for Best SF novel of 1958.

In the Change War stories, two enemies, called "The Spiders" and "The Snakes," are engaged in a vast war, which has been going on for a billion years and may go on for another billion, with battles throughout the universe. The battles are fought, in part, by going back (or forward) in time, to change the outcome of a historic event and therefore warp the path of history so as to lead to the eventual victory of one side or the other. Soldiers recruited for the fight can be Roman gladiators, 15th century Hussars, Nazi soldiers, or even extraterrestials.

Although the scope of the Change War takes in all of space and time, Leiber daringly wrote this as a very short novel (probably only about 100 pages or so in printed text) and set it in a single room over the course of only a few hours, with characters entering and exiting as if in a play. Despite the short length and limited physical and temporal scope of the novel, the plot takes any number of twists and turns, and the story deals with complex themes of fate, loyalty, war and peace, and existentialism. No one knows what the "Spiders" and "Snakes" really are, or what the war is actually about; history has been changed so many times by the warring factions that no one can be sure what reality is any more. Thus, the book is both an exciting piece of science fiction and a genuinely profound meditation on the human condition. Leiber's penchant for word play is also evident, and the story is full of literary and historical allusions. A short read, but very rewarding.

Revolutionary journalist

This is a great biography of the muckraking journalist Lincoln Steffens who exposed a number of corrupt practices by politicians in many of the large cities in America around the turn of the twentieth-century. Born in San Francisco and educated at the University of California and in Europe, he settled in NYC and began writing for the New York papers. In 1901 he joined McClure's Magazine and with other social critics working there (Ida Tarbell, Ray Stannard Baker) began writing about political corruption in St. Louis, Minneapolis, and other large cities. The articles were a tremendous success and were later brought out in book form, entitled THE SHAME OF THE CITIES. Theodore Roosevelt was impressed by the work of these journalists (at first, anyway) and tagged them "muckrakers," a reference to certain characters in PILGIM'S PROGRESS. Steffens, as Kaplan makes clear, was not just an exposer of political evils or a moralist, but raised more questions than he answered and made the public aware, through irony and other literary devices, of the paradoxes between public life and private affairs. His chief question, as Kaplan says, was "What are you going to do about it?"

Later, when exposed to the Russian Revolution in 1917, Steffens became an advocate for communist principles. Losing much of his support in America because of his revolutionary beliefs, he spent much of the 1920s in Europe. In 1931 he published his AUTOBIOGRAPHY, which was a huge success, and he spent the next few years until his death in 1936 lecturing across the country. More than anything else, Steffens wanted people to think seriously about society and politics; he never joined the Communist party: "I am not a Communist," he said once. "I merely think that the next order of society will be socialist and that the Communists will bring it in and lead it." He was wrong about that, and not even Kaplan, writing in 1974, could know just how wrong. He's a beautiful writer, though, and makes his subject interesting and important. It's a delightful biography.

A Twentieth Century Radical

Lincoln Steffens is an historical figure who has faded from public memory for two reasons. The first is that his career as a journalist and political activist is not the type as to make a record that would hold interest after his story was no longer retained in living memory. The second reason is that his left-wing advocacy and idolization of the Soviet Union made his saga one to be suppressed during the Cold War. Steffens was born in California in 1866 and achieved prominence as a muckraking reporter for McClure's Magazine along with Ida Tarbell and Ray Baker.

Early in his career he cooperated with Progressive reformers, most prominently Theodore Roosevelt, in uncovering and exposing the corruption and shameful conditions in America's cities. Eventually he would part company with TR as their positions followed different paths. Steffens espoused non-involvement in World War I. As the war ended, he participated in an American mission to revolutionary Russia after which he reported "I have seen the future and it works." Thereafter he walked a line as an apologist for the Soviet Union and Communism without actually joining the party. He came to believe that a better day was coming and that Communists would lead it. In his day his autobiography became a widely read book and he finished his career as a sought after lecturer until his death in 1936.

I first read this book to learn of Steffens' association with Theodore Roosevelt but, as I read it, I learned much more. This biography provides the reader with an introduction to just how attractive the Communist experiment in the Soviet Union was to radical American intellectuals and makes us realize that the "Red Scares" were not merely right wing paranoia because there were respected people in the public square really believing that Communism was the wave that would carry the world to a better day.

I selected this book over Steffens' autobiography with the thought that it would give a different perspective of his work. I think that was a good choice. Author Justin Kaplan has written with a style that never wearies the reader. One test I sometimes apply to a book is whether it whets my appetite for more books on the same topic. In this case, that would be the autobiography. Right now I feel no urge to pick it up soon. I think that only a real student of radical movements in the first third of the Twentieth Century would find Steffens a figure worth reading about.

This is not the most recent bio, but it remains worthy. S. was reared in a CA that was largely empty and held many who remembered the gold rush. he studied in late Victorian Germany. K. has a fine portrait of German education at that time. It became the world standard.
S. became a journalist from necessity. He became famous as a muckraker. The Shame of the Cities is an enduring classic. S. also realized that the "regulars" offered things that the reformers did not, notably help for individuals.
For those involved in the New Left of the 60s there were holdovers from the Old Left. Steffens had been a mentor to them; he, in turn, went back to the days of Big Bill Haywood and Gene Debs. S. was a remarkable mentor. Two of his proteges were John Reed and Walter Lippman. the former is buried in the Kremlin. The latter was a conservative journalist for years, ending as an anti-war liberal in the 60s. a must read, the Frank Rich of his era. S. was a mentor to many others. he did not teach people what to think but how.
Until he became politically unacceptable, S.'s autobiography was a standard college text.
never a joiner, S. supported the Soviet experiment. He was tired of liberals who could do little more than think and talk and fail to act.
A good account of a fascinating life.

Poignant at times, but otherwise hilarious!!!

What a life!! Mr. Edward Everett Tanner (a.k.a. "Pat"...Patrick Dennis...Virginia Rowans) did EVERYthing, wasn't afraid of ANYthing. From the experiences of his deep and lifelong commitment to friends, to wife and children, sprang all of the side-splitting laughter he has left us---"Auntie Mame", though definitely his chef-d'ouvre, is nonetheless only a small part of the body of his extensive work.
Too bad it took him the better part of his life to come out to himself---maybe it would have made a difference in his literary output, since so much of his comedy was tied to then-clandestine camp. But who knows or cares? Any man who can find humor even in the penury of his last years is a creative genius on any level.
You'll laugh often, and out loud, and get some great lines for cocktail conversation!!

Eric Myers does a terrific job of capturing the soul and spirit of Edward Tanner (aka Virginia Rowans, aka Patrick Dennis). Myers' deft biographical skills show how Tanner saved his venom for the page and, alas, for himself, leaving behind family and friends who clearly loved him and love him still, nearly a quarter of a century after his death. The author also encapsulates the best parts of Tanner's sixteen novels and makes a strong case for Tanner's skill as a chronicler of mid-twentieth-century America, as he skewered the pompous and championed the unique. Frank Lloyd Wright (born Frank Lincoln Wright, June 8, 1867 - April 9, 1959) was an American architect, interior designer, writer and educator, who designed more than 1,000 projects, which resulted in more than 500 completed works. His work includes original and innovative examples of many different building types, including offices, churches, schools, skyscrapers, hotels, and museums. Wright authored 20 books and many articles, and was a popular lecturer in the United States and in Europe. His colorful personal life often made headlines, most notably for the 1914 fire and murders at his Taliesin studio. Already well-known during his lifetime, Wright was recognized in 1991 by the American Institute of Architects as "the greatest American architect of all time
