A love affair with Wyoming

Gretel Erlich was a poet and filmmaker when she first came to Wyoming in 1976. She was so taken with everything about the place that she became a cowherd, which gave her time to write about the American West. Reading her books, however, is very much like seeing a film, for her filmmaker's eye and awareness of nuance and gesture is evident in the way she chooses her words.
In The Solace of Open Spaces, Erlich presents us with an eclectic bunch of frontier characters that she met while working as a ranch hand. Almost unaware of what's been accomplished, we readers find ourselves shedding former stereotypes of these people in exchange for seeing them for what they are: unique, quirky, interesting, inexplicable men and women. The Weather (and the word deserves that capital letter, as you'll see upon reading the book) plays as large a role as the people in Ehrlich's book.
About the title: When she arrived in Wyoming, Erlich was grieving the death of someone important to her. As she works hard at physical labor, meets new people, falls in love with the land, and sheds her past like sweat running down her back, healing from grief occurs - although she doesn't exactly say this.
Altogether, a beautiful book and a wonderful read.

An affirmation of life in a large landscape

My first images of Wyoming were formed as a boy, watching "The Virginian" on TV. It was a landscape of gently rolling hills and a mild climate where you could go around in shirtsleeves pretty much all the time. Well, of course, Wyoming bears no resemblance to a Southern California back lot, as I learned when I finally went there as an adult. The climate is not benign, and the land has a scale that can make you and your problems seem very small indeed.
Gretel Ehrlich writes about the true Wyoming of vast, lonely spaces, and brutal, bone chilling winters. In her book, it is a place to lose oneself and then find redemption in the rhythm of life lived in a hard place. She writes about the people that live in this place and their relationships.She writes of lonliness and endurance, friendship and new beginnings.
The highlight of the book, for me, is "The Rules of the Game", an appreciative essay on Rodeo. I've not read anything like it. Ms Ehrlich's description finds the beauty in this celebration of both individual skill and achievement, and the power and grace of teamwork. It's a lovely piece in a wonderful book.

The West seen through a filmmaker's eye

In these essays about Wyoming, the imagery of mountain and plain and weather calls to mind the sweeping landscapes of John Ford movies. Ehrlich, born and raised in California, retains her outsider's eye for detail, and is able to translate the perspective of someone trained in documentary filmmaking very effectively into the medium of words.

Her portrayal of the men who work in this environment is very different from the stereotypes we know from Marlboro ads, "Bonanza," and movie westerns. She finds cowboys often tender-hearted, quirky, and curiously courtly. Not to be outdone by the men in this world of extremes and hard work, the women she meets and befriends are tough-minded and independent. Completing her picture are the Native Americans, whom she portrays respectfully and with an ironic appreciation for incongruity, as they both recover and reinvent a lost heritage.
Hers is also a personal story. Beginning with the wrenching death of a close male friend, it recounts in her growing love for Wyoming and its people the discovery of a new life. And while her book is no heart-on-the-sleeve display of pain and recovery, one senses at almost every step the healing process that underlies the words. As slender as a book of poems, this volume of essays calls out to be read slowly and savored, word for word.

The actual novel is very much to my liking and even though I am yet to complete it I know I would be satisfied. However, where as I only have praise for the author, the same cannot be said for the publisher. The paper back is 17cm*10.5cm*4.5cm and the font is tiny and printed too close to the spine. It is difficult to read this book seated on a couch and near impossible to read lying in bed. Apparently Tom Doherty Associates, LLC felt that reading a 1000 page book was not enough the had to make it a challenge.
If you get this book get the kindle edition or Bloomsbury Print.

Will you like this book - a brief quiz

1. Have you read the Amazon excerpt or, better yet, the first chapter? If not, please do so. This, for better or worse, is what the next several hundred pages are going to be - dense, semi-archaic prose; voluminous footnotes in tiny print, few of which relate to the plot; and a very focussed, extremely painstaking approach to what some may feel is a genre best treated with a little less solemnity.

2. Do you have a LOT of time on your hands? The book demands as much. It does not easily lend itself to brief sessions of reading over an extended period of time.

3. Would it bother you to spend all that time and all those pages on a narrative whose main characters are somewhat less than sympathetic? If any of the answers are "No" then maybe another book would provide a more pleasurable reading experience.

However, please note the five star rating. This is a magical experience, with double meaning fully intended. I've read the book twice from cover to cover in the last six months and will probably revisit it again this summer. Ms. Clarke has created a world which compares, in richness and detail, with any of her contemporaries and most of her predecessors. The plot holds together remarkably well considering the infinity of digressions she provides. I am dying for a sequel. If you're interested, but not convinced, I would strongly recommend taking advantage of Barnes and Noble's comfortable chairs, or those in your closest library, and perusing a chapter or two. This is one of the best books I've read this year and I usually read a book per day. The language is clear, descriptive yet has a Victorian flavor (yes I know it's Regency England but the writing is more gothic novel). Plunging into actual Regency personalities and events we encounter a Northern Yorkshire Magician, Mr. Norrell. Selfish, fearful, greedy and a book hog there is little to commend him other than his dedication to magical scholarship. Jonathan Strange will not appear for many chapters, but then he is there with a bang. Quite a different personality than Norrell, Strange has a natural aptitude for magic but is beset with arrogance and self interest. Still he comes off as a much more sympathetic figure. Additional characters are quite complex and each uniquely different and active throughout. The English, magic, fairy, curse, enchantment theme is well researched and brilliantly put together with a very intriguing plot based upon Arthurian and fairy mythology. Although there is some romance involved, this is more fantasy. Beware the perils of fairy mounds.

ARE THE CENTRAL CLAIMS OF CHRISTIANITY "STRAIGHTFORWARD DEDUCTIONS OF THE LAWS OF PHYSICS"?

Frank Jennings Tipler (born 1947) is a mathematical physicist and cosmologist at Tulane University. He has written other books such as The Physics of Christianity, The Anthropic Cosmological Principle, etc.

He wrote in the Preface to this 1994 book, "It is unique to find a book asserting, as I shall... that theology is a branch of physics, that physicists can infer by calculation the existence of God and the likelihood of the resurrection of the dead to eternal life... When I began my career as a cosmologist ... I was a convinced atheist. I never in my wildest dreams imagined that one day I would be writing a book purporting to show that the central claims of Judeo-Christian theology are in fact true, that these claims are straightforward deductions of the laws of physics as we now understand them. I have been forced into these conclusions by the inexorable logic of my own special branch of physics." (Pg. ix) He says, "The main thrust of this book is to prove that such eternal progress is not only possible but inevitable, and will ultimately result in our salvation." (Pg. 104)

He begins with the statement, "This book is a description of the Omega Point Theory, which is a testable physical theory for an omnipresent, omniscient, omnipotent God who will one day in the far future resurrect every single one of us to life forever in an abode which is in all essentials the Judeo-Christian Heaven." (Pg. 1) He summarizes, "the indefinitely continued existence of life ... leads naturally to a model of a God Who is evolving in His/Her immanent aspect... and yet is eternally complete in His/Her transcendent aspect (the Omega Point, which is neither space nor time nor matter, but is beyond all of these)." (Pg. 158) He suggests, "I am thus in effect proposing that we identify the universal wave function constrained by the Omega Point Boundary Condition with the Holy Spirit." (Pg. 185)

He contends, "the evidence is overwhelming that in about thirty-odd years we should be able to make a machine which is as intelligent as a human being, or more so." (Pg. 43) He adds, "in the very far future, near the end of time, only robots can survive in the extreme conditions that will prevail over the entire universe. BUT---if the robots survive, they can keep us alive also, as emulations in the computers of the far future." (Pg. 87) Later, he states, "the technical terms for the reality we as resurrected individuals shall inhabit in the far future is 'virtual reality' or 'cyberspace.'" (Pg. 220)

Perhaps surprisingly, he reveals, "I do not yet even believe in the Omega Point. The Omega Point Theory is a viable scientific theory of the future of the physical universe, but the only evidence in its favor at the moment is theoretical beauty, for there is as yet no confirming experimental evidence for it. Thus scientifically one is not compelled to accept it at the time of my writing these words. So I do not... But of course I also think the Omega Point Theory has a very good chance of being right... If the Omega Point Theory is confirmed, I shall then consider myself a theist." (Pg. 305)

Although Tipler comes up with some very quotable, orthodox-sounding "sound bites," I find his conclusions far from strongly supported by the evidence he adduces. But read the book for yourself, and reach your own conclusions.

I was literally swept away into the battle scenes, the romance, the fierce loyalty and honor even if it went against matters of the heart. I nearly cried several times while reading this story and was so engrossed a bomb could have gone off outside and I would've kept reading...And talk about an ending that leaves you begging for more. Sheesh! But it was more than satisfying. I'm just glad that April is only a few months away."

Nicole is happily married to her college sweetheart and has three adorable sons. A story of a little girl with big dreams.

Aislinn is a little girl with big dreams. After the death of her older brother, she decides to follow in his footsteps and become a lady knight. Her quest for knighthood brings many challenges and the temptation of forbidden love. Aislinn learns that being a knight means putting the Kingdom in front of personal concerns and helping those that cannot help themselves. In a journey is fraught with danger and filled with adventure, Aislinn is forced to grow up fast. She must stay strong and develop the skills necessary to realize her lifelong dream.

With sword fights, passionate love, mythical creatures, and courtly games, Woman of Honor is my kind of book. I love the idea of incorporating real history in fantasy, and Ms. Zoltack's book is based on the real life story of a group of female knights. Blending history with fiction, her writing is full of plot and adventure and her characters are strong and believable. Most of all, I grew to love all of them and cared about their hardships and successes.

Aislinn is quite the main protagonist. She's tenacious and bold, beautiful and strong. The romance that blooms between her and the prince is well developed after years of solid friendship and teasing. I enjoyed reading about their secret courtship and had no idea how their romance would turn out! Ms. Zoltack has a few twists in store that will shock and startle as well as please.

In conclusion, I thoroughly recommend this book for everyone that enjoys fantasy, romance and adventure! I will be eagerly awaiting the sequel, Knight of Glory.

A Medieval Fantasy Coming-of-Age

Nicole Zoltack's WOMAN OF HONOR weaves the tale of the first lady knight of Arnhem. Sprinkled with historical facts, bullies, and a good dose of love and honor, WOMAN OF HONOR is a coming of age novel set in the fantastical medieval world of Arnhem Kingdom. Aislinn is brave and truly grows to be a woman of honor. The characters are likeable and realistic. We feel Aislinn's pains while she tries to prove herself. She overcomes tradition and the growing threat of Speica. This novel has history, knights, and mythological creatures and is filled with intrigue, mystery, horror, and, most important of all, love. In this first book of the Kingdom of Arnhem series, I feel like we touch upon their lives and a conflict looming in their future. By the end, I craved more from this fantastical world, and I'm glad Ms. Zoltack supplied it in her next book.

A girl who knows what she wants and goes for it.

I often have to reset my brain during the first chapter or two of books that are new worlds, and this was the same. The story started strong though and was definitely worth the effort. I had to remind myself that in the age and place of Nicole's world, children grow up a lot faster than my four. They have a maturity necessary for the hardships they will face.

Aislinn came off strong and determined from the very beginning. I loved that she knew what she wanted and wasn't afraid to go after it even though it was not the accepted norm for her country. Many times she was so stubbornly focused on her goal that she missed or ignored certain aspects of a child's life. This was one of the things that made her so real to me. I could relate to that stubborn focus.

I also loved how she matured over the years. One of my favorite scenes is when she breaks down in tears over the death of a young girl. It is a great moment when you realize what a caring woman she has grown into on top of her strength as a knight in training. The balance and realism is expertly crafted. A true example of how to show who your character is and not telling.

There is also a sweet romance woven through this book. I didn't feel like it was the main focus, but the back and forth between these characters is so natural you can't help but be swept away by it. When it looks like there is no way they can ever be together, you ache with Aislinn.

All in all, I really enjoyed this read and can't wait for life to slow down so I can read the next two books in the series.
